ABSTRACT

One of the main concerns underlying the archaeological study if the Guarei River Basin, State of São Paulo, Brazil, is to understand the adaptation of the prehistoric groups to the regional environment. However, the shortage of information about the Upper Quaternary of the region prevents any trial of approaching human/landscape integration. For this reason, an environmental study is being developed in parallel, which purposes are to define the landscape units within the basin and to provide information about landscape evolution during the last geological period. The implications of the study and the methodology being followed are discussed.
