ABSTRACT

The value of the pedicellariae in classifying within the genus Echinus was assessed by comparing the ophiocephalous pedicellariae of two closely related species. Because of difficulties in distinguishing between Echinus acutus and Echinus melo, using the standard skeletal features, the ophiocephalous pedicellariae are included in the species diagnoses as additional and more clear-cut characteristics. The diagnostic value of this pedicellaria type is discussed; it is shown to be useful not only in respect of the genus Echinus but also the genus Psammechinus.
