ABSTRACT

Plutella xylostella is a member of the lepidopterous pest complex in cabbage crops in western Europe. The species can reach damaging population levels in warm and dry summers but in adverse weather conditions its populations remain small. Because this potential pest does not always reach a pest status practical monitoring methods to establish its presence could be of some interest. During the growing seasons of 1983 and 1984 per site three traps loaded with pheromone dispensers were placed in and near cabbage fields. To be used in a general early warning system for P. xylostella infestation of cabbage crops pheromone trapping does not give meaningful information. Since trapping results do not indicate infestation of the field in which the traps were placed they certainly are not representative for a region other than a qualitative presence/absence indication of the adults.
