ABSTRACT

The meeting of experts on “Integrated plant protection in field vegetables” was organised jointly by the Commission of the European Communities and the International Organisation for Biological and integrated Control. The most important aspects concerned the use of less pesticides in vegetable growing, and the urgency to investigate alternative methods to control the main pests and diseases. The experts greatly appreciated the opportunity to meet, and learn about the different problems which are posed in the different countries concerning the application of integrated control to vegetable crops in the open field. The participants think that exchanges of researchers, and the establishment of joint programme, could speed up a wide-ranging application of the results. To achieve this goal they propose that certain research themes be pursued in close collaboration. The participants also hope that young researchers be given the possibility of specialising in the various aspects of integrated pest control by spending research time in specialised laboratories.
