ABSTRACT

Fossil leaves of Nothofagus betuloides were found in association with remains of Didymodon sp. (musci) and a probable seed. They were found in Early Holocene sediments (9380 ± 105 yr B.P.) from Chorrillo Packewaia, Gable Island, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. The presence of Nothofagus betuloides in Gable Island before the opening of the Beagle Channel is therefore confirmed. Possible local environmental conditions are discussed.
