ABSTRACT

India covers an area of approximately 3.3 million square kilometres. Over the last four decades the country has embarked on a variety of developmental projects involving a substantial outlay in civil engineering ventures. The earthquake problem in India has assumed significance because some of the regions hitherto considered seismically stable are now noticed to be showing signs of activity. Important experimental facilities required by the country were also considered at the seminar and in this connection the creation of national centrifuge facilities were also discussed. As a consequence of the favourable response to this seminar, the Department of Science and Technology have, in their final document, identified the creation of national centrifuge facilities as one of the thrust areas in engineering to be pursued. To be useful to several organisations the centrifuge should have a dynamics capability. India will doubtless have to draw on the experience gained elsewhere in the world.
