ABSTRACT

A number of maize varieties have been tested for their BYDV susceptibility in the field and in the glasshouse. Differences in the establishment and multiplication of Rhopalosiphum padi L., the aphid vector of BYDV, as well as the multiplication and the effects of this virus on the crop were shown. The objective of the ongoing breeding programme is to find varieties resistant to BYDV and its aphid vectors in order to avoid yield losses and to reduce viral inoculum which is transferred to winter small grain cereals.
