ABSTRACT

The Neyveli Lignite field of South Arcot District of Tamilnadu is about 200 km southwest of Madras in South India. The sedimentary strata exposed at the Second Mine area is of upper Miocene age and associated with Tertiary formation except the top alluvial sticky clay, sandstone, clays, lignite and aquifer sands. The outside dumping yard of the Second Mine is located west of the initial mine cut beyond the lignite bearing area at about 500 m away from the mine boundary. Neyveli, being close to the eastern coastal area and being in the cyclonic belt, has a normal annual rainfall of 1200mm to 1800 mm. The rain water during the monsoon months (October to December) poses many problems in the operation of the mine. The Neyveli Second Mine has encountered many problems during its developmental phase and afterwards. Neyveli has been quite successful in solving many of these problems and has gained immeasurable experience.
