ABSTRACT

Chapter 13 provides a detailed assessment of smart microgrids. What value is added by deploying smart technologies? As microgrids begin to morph into smart microgrids, new concepts have emerged that redefine how to deploy microgrids and incorporate new technologies. Information about energy production and loads is collected at a granular scale and algorithms analyze the data to effect efficiency improvements. Smart microgrids create additional benefits and expand opportunities for services by overlaying information age communication technologies. An objective of this chapter is to consider how smart systems are integrated into microgrids and enhance the transfer of electricity to and from the customer. This chapter also details what smart microgrids are, how they work, and the key differences between traditional and smart microgrids. These types of microgrids are variously called advanced microgrids or advanced remote microgrids. They apply remote sensing, advanced metering, and digital communications. The chapter also provides real-world examples of smart microgrid projects under development and those already deployed.
