ABSTRACT

This chapter, based on a series of recently conducted ethnographies, seeks to argue that peace as value based on the triad of rights, justice and democracy finds it difficult – though not impossible – to realize itself. For peace has a tendency of turning into a regime of power itself with its elaborate repertoire of governing technologies. The journey from peace as power to peace as value is neither smooth nor seamless. This chapter reflects on the roadblocks in the journey and finds out how peace as value wields power – albeit a different kind of power – under the most difficult circumstances. The battle between peace as power and power of peace is uneven and asymmetric.
