ABSTRACT

The curators for the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial invited more than 120 artists and architects from thirty countries for the purpose of determining 'The State of the Art of Architecture.' Opening on 3 October 2015 with 31,000 people in attendance, this three-month event included the notable architecture of the city, exhibits, full-scale installations and new lakefront kiosks. Over a half-million people attended the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, the first such in North America. For three months, Chicago, known for its historic architecture, was engaged in determining architecture's current state. In the interest of complete accuracy, it should be noted at the outset that not a single finalist actually designed a kiosk at all. The definition as given in the Chicago Architecture Biennial: Lakefront Kiosk Competition was brief, The Lakefront Kiosk announcement stated: 'Though the winning kiosk will be a small structure—a work of micro-architecture—it will reinforce the city's broader commitment to forward-thinking design.
