ABSTRACT

During the Velvet Revolution of 1989, members of the student movement used to live and meet in what later became readers apartment. And they had lived and worked there ever since we came to the Czech Republic in the early 1990s. It was an autumn evening in 1992. They put on their best clothes and went to meet the owner of a house in Petrinska street in Prague. The house used to belong to the Wichterle family. Its oldest inhabitant was born right there eighty-seven years ago. Thrust out into the road, with a rope tied to the dustbins, lying upside down, the chair was publicly announcing that what was inside was on its way out. Since that day, it was no longer the house they used to know. The spirit of a place includes both material and incorporeal things such as shape, light, smell, colour, sound, and one’s private objects and their arrangements.
