ABSTRACT

One approach is the approach of good technical corporate governance: to produce a strong board, one needs to identify the features of effective boards and get boards to adopt these features. A board is a social system made up of individuals, and each individual’s unique identity and ways of operating contribute to the overall group dynamics. To summarize, a board exists to serve an organization, but a board also has an emotional life. If the emotional needs of the individuals on the board are not being met adequately, these will interfere with the board’s functioning and the board will be unable to do its job properly. To promote strong board dynamics, directors need to develop a learning and coaching culture that enhances collaboration on the board. Establishing a learning and coaching culture involves three components: acknowledgement, awareness and action.
