ABSTRACT
The construction sector is aware of the need of measuring, avoiding and reducing environmental damage caused by construction materials, processes, services, construction methods and sites, under a life cycle perspective. ACCIONA has the strategy of considering Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a tool for both environmental and business management as decision-making tool for their projects. The last years, the company has increased the use of innovated materials like Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) instead of concrete and steel in civil infrastructures with the aim to reduce environmental impacts and improving sustainability of infrastructures. The application of LCA methodology in these cases has contributed to measure impacts reduced and improving construction processes. Thanks to this expertise, ACCIONA has been the first company in the world in obtaining an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) of a whole road project (N-320 road).
