ABSTRACT
Noise is one of the most common problems facing EHPs in the UK. This chapter provides an introduction to basic acoustics and parameters for measuring noise. The chapter also provides an introduction to the measurement of noise and what is good practice. Planning and noise is a hot topic from time to time as prevention of problems is always seen as better that trying to resolve them later on. This is covered in some detail here as is noise as nuisance. The EU has accepted that a noisy environment compromises health and wellbeing and so there is a section on the EU Noise Directive as well as other aspects of the health effects of noise.
