ABSTRACT

This chapter draws upon ongoing research examining the needs and experiences of women and men who are over 50 and in prison, on both sides of Atlantic. The chapter will landscape the older prison population and will identify the needs of this older population and the challenges the group poses to the prison estate. American researchers such as Ron Aday have led research in this area, and it is only in the last ten years that researchers in the UK (see Manthorpe 1983; Phillips 1996; Wahidin 2004) have examined the relationship between ageing and crime.
