ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the lessons learnt from the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998 from the perspective of the private sector, which we take to be Asian-based companies, investors and banks. Since there is not likely to be a single “private sector” perspective that can capture the divergent views of each of these components of the private sector in Asia, one cannot pretend to speak on behalf of all private sector perspectives, particularly on an issue as complex and as emotive as the Asian financial crisis. So, what this chapter will do is to give a personal view on the crisis and the lessons learnt.
