ABSTRACT
Although many cases of elder abuse may be offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, relatively few come to the attention of the criminal justice system. Seniors may fear losing their relationships with abusive family members or friends if they identify mistreatment or seek assistance. In addition, allegations of abuse may be discounted by the police and by others. An innovative project in Waterloo, Ontario provides a safe environment in which to address the mistreatment of an older adult in a way that is fair and just for all concerned. Representatives from health, justice, cultural/faith and social services collaborate to provide an opportunity for change and healing to the affected people through the use of healing circles.
