ABSTRACT

Each of the eight combinations of one Space word (Direct or Flexible) with one Time word (Fast or Slow) and one Force word (Strong or Light) is called an Effort Action. Laban gave a ‘code word’ for each of these: they serve as useful shorthand when talking about movement rhythms. However, it is important to learn the ‘ingredients’ for each Effort Action first, carefully, with conscious choice, so that you are aware of its full range, instead of going for a generalised effect aroused by the code word.
