ABSTRACT

Regional popular cinema and ‘Bollywood’ Indian cinema has attracted much attention globally as a body to have withstood the commercial onslaught of Hollywood but, for some reason, the popular variety is considered synonymous with ‘Bollywood’ or Hindi cinema from the city of Mumbai, the former Bombay. Only around a third of the cinema made in India is in Hindi and it has been suggested1 that the ‘cinemas of India’ is a more appropriate way to regard the body as a whole because of the varieties of film that ‘Indian cinema’ has traditionally included.
