ABSTRACT

It is a curious circumstance that while everybody knows what a dreadful thing it is to be a bore, very many people do not know the few simple rules which are necessary in order to avoid this misfortune. I am thinking of writing a treatise in seven volumes, laying down all the different ways of being a bore and how to avoid them. As, however, it may be some time before this treatise is finished, I think it my duty to give some of the results to the world in a preliminary and incomplete form.
