ABSTRACT

The previous chapter provided an overview of privatisation activity between 1983 and 1987. In this and the following chapter a more detailed account is provided of a number of the major privatisations undertaken by the second Thatcher Government, namely British Airways, Rolls-Royce, shipbuilding including the naval dockyards, and bus transport and the Royal Ordnance Factories. Each of these privatisations involved specific challenges and difficulties. For example, the sales of the shipyards and the Royal Dockyards and the privatisation of bus services were particularly drawn out and not completed until after the 1987 General Election.
