ABSTRACT
Secure psychiatric hospital facilities play an important role for both mental health services and the criminal justice system. Local mental health services need access to secure in-patient beds for patients whose behaviour is particularly hazardous and difficult to manage. The police, criminal courts and prisons also commonly deal with arrestees and offenders with mental disorder who need hospital care in secure conditions. The security may be needed for safe clinical management, for reasons of public safety and for public confidence.
