ABSTRACT

As noted in the Introduction, this book has set out to present and examine aspects of New Labour’s reforms to the provision of public education in England. In this sense the contributions explore the English system as a type of laboratory where the pace of experimentation has been frenetic (Finkelstein and Grubb 2000). Drawing primarily on our research and development activity at the University of Manchester, we have explored New Labour’s reforms across four key strands for change:

• standards and accountability • workforce reform • choice and diversity • Every Child Matters agenda.
