ABSTRACT

This chapter1 investigates the role of cotton in income generation (and poverty incidence) among small farmers in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR). It argues that cotton production does not necessarily make a positive contribution to the income of Uygur peasants in Xinjiang and to poverty reduction, as this depends very much on the technology and infrastructure available and the institutional framework. The study uses official data that provide detailed information on various economic sectors, in this case agriculture.
