ABSTRACT

The term “regionalism” refers to the general practice of discrimination from the people of a certain region toward the people of another region. However, regionalism as it exists in Korea today is a major social issue referring to the practice of discrimination toward Honam-born people in particular by people born outside the region. Prejudice and discrimination toward people of the Honam (Cholla) region are deeply rooted practices evident throughout the history of the country (Ko Hung-Hwa 1989; Song Bok 1990). Despite the rapid urbanization and industrialization that Korea has undergone for nearly half a century, the practice of regionalism still remains an important pillar of the country’s social structure to this day.
