ABSTRACT

The Ecologisation of Schools is an international OECD project which currently involves ten countries. It is based on the 1986 Environment and School Initiatives (ENSI) project, one of the first international projects to promote development and research in ambitious, environment-oriented project instruction (OECD/CERI, 1995;Posch/Mair, 1997;Elliott, 1998, ch. 7). The Ecologisation of Schools (ECOLOG) programme currently involves 22 pilot schools in Austria, from primary to secondary technical school level. It is largely administered by the same teachers who were able to gain experiences in the ENSI project (see Appendix). In the following, I will try to discuss three issues at greater length:

What do we understand by the ecologisation of schools?

What is innovative in this project?

Which framework conditions are important for the success of the project?
