ABSTRACT

Population ageing has been one of the government’s major concerns in Taiwan since the 1980s. The current age distribution of the population is relatively young, compared with those in Western advanced capitalist economies; however, official projections have shown that Taiwan is witnessing rapid population ageing. The government has recognised that current policies must undergo radical changes and has devoted much effort to policy planning for its ageing society. During the last two decades, several new schemes were introduced, and major reforms on related policy areas were conducted.
