ABSTRACT
The chapter is organized into two main sections and is based on the author’s PhD research, carried out between April 2002 and January 2004, among the communities of Yorùbá immigrants living in Leicester and Nottingham.3 The first section will consider the historical and social changes that have occurred in the interpretation and definition of non-Western objects (with a specific focus on African/Yorùbá objects). The second section will focus on some of the results of the research. It will present the perception of Yorùbá people towards contemporary Yorùbás and traditional Yorùbá objects, within a postcolonial society and a postcolonial institution, such as the museum.
