ABSTRACT

Introduction It is a common saying that the television commercial1 is a mirror that reflects society. We can remember the good old days by watching commercials from that time. Looking back at images reflected in the mirror, we can identify the characteristics of the period. That means commercials could be a useful resource for cultural studies. The history of the Japanese commercial started in 1953 with the opening of the first commercial broadcasting station (NTV). It is estimated that over 500,000 commercial clips were created in more than 50 years. The history of commercials in Japan is certainly lengthy enough to be taken as a topic for academic discussion.
