ABSTRACT

Most voyages of exploration have destinations in mind and when reached, the voyage is at an end. In the leadership for learning journey, our destination is clear: understanding learning, leadership and the links between the two. We embarked on our travels through the Carpe Vitam Project but we are still on the ‘longue durée’ towards understanding. We feel that we have passed and charted a number of important headlands and points along the way and that we are now better equipped to continue the expedition. What are those important headlands and points? To step back from the seafaring metaphor, we ask in this final chapter: ‘What have we learned about leadership for learning that makes it qualitatively different from other conceptions of leadership?’ We also ask what implications our understanding carries for policy makers, for practitioners, for school self-evaluation and improvement.
