ABSTRACT

Active Healthy Kids Canada was established as a charitable organization in 1994 to advocate the importance of physical activity for children and youth. As a national leader in this area, Active Healthy Kids Canada advocates an increase in quality, accessible, enjoyable physical activity participation experiences for all children and youth where they live, learn and play. Its vision is a nation of active healthy kids and it is focused on making physical activity a major priority in the everyday lives of Canadian families. Active Healthy Kids Canada has embarked upon a strategy to provide ‘The Power to Move Kids™’ through a variety of public education, communications and advocacy activities. The primary activity of this strategy is the establishment of an annual ‘report card’ that assesses physical activity behaviors and opportunities for children and youth in Canada. The first report card was released in 2005. Each year a concise summary report card is produced (in English and French) in addition to a more detailed ‘long-form’ report card containing the detailed research and statistical information informing the grades. An overall failing grade of ‘D’ was assessed on the 2005 and 2006 report cards (AHKC, 2005a, 2006). The purpose of this paper is to describe the process and outcome of the 2007 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth.
