ABSTRACT

In 2000, the world celebrated the start of the new millennium. Booming, selfcon dent new China marked the event with the rest of the world. In Beijing the government sponsored the Millennium Monument, a dramatic semicircular, rotating structure. The monument celebrates the millennium, and at the same time ful ls a critical historical role. It traces China’s history and culture back to pre-history, it connects the present to the earliest origins of man, and it gives this connection a mystical, as well as a concrete form.
