ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to examine the ways in which the international economy has provided – and has the potential to provide in future – employment opportunities to people living in developing countries (particularly in Asia, where there is endemic unemployment and poverty). The phenomenon of overseas migration has played a dynamic role in the development of both developed and developing countries for centuries, but in recent times it has become a much more potent instrument of development policy for the latter.
