ABSTRACT

In this chapter Bill McGowan provides the reader with the honest and revealing diary of a staff group facilitator that highlights a number of the themes and issues discussed in Part I. He illustrates the importance of preliminary negotiations around things like room logistics and group membership (see Chapters 3 and 4), and how a tacit understanding with the unit manager can come unstuck when a membership boundary is crossed. He shows the considerable pressures on the facilitator who struggles to survive and keep the group going (see Chapter 5), and illustrates several of the issues around endings, including the risks to the facilitator of burnout, that we discuss in Chapter 7. McGowan discusses several of these points in his concluding re¯ections.
