ABSTRACT

Many staff support group facilitators work as clinicians or managers in the same organisation as the group they are facilitating. In some ways this may seem an easy solution to some of the questions and negotiations that need to be addressed in setting up a staff support group, which we take the reader through in Chapter 4. However, this situation also creates a number of issues that do not confront the external facilitator. In this chapter Chris Powell addresses these and describes how he understands and works with them in his own organisation. These include complex decisions around con®dentiality and the sharing or withholding of information across hierarchical and personal boundaries. Powell here extends the discussion of boundaries in Chapters 5 and 6. As most of the examples in Part I of the book involve an external facilitator, this chapter gives a valuable alternative perspective.
