ABSTRACT
Our chapter title was provided by the editors. The question it asks takes us straight to the heart of the problem we shall address. To ask such a question implies that it is reasonable to expect a particular ‘this’, a piece of writing which has a particular ‘who’ as an author. What we explore is why this is a reasonable assumption and why, despite this fact, the task of the linguist as a detective is by no means straightforward.
