ABSTRACT

For thousands of years people saw the sun move across the sky from east to west, day after day. From this and other equally reliable data they built theories that placed the earth at the center of the universe. But finally, in the 16th century, Copernicus looked at the same evidence and saw something different. If the earth moved around the sun and rotated once each day as it did so, wouldn’t it appear to those of us standing on the earth that the sun was moving? The revolution Copernicus launched changed the view of the universe and made it possible for humanity to understand many phenomena in new and productive ways. We could see things that we had looked at but had not seen before. Such a Copernican revolution is taking place in our understanding of the written language processes.
