ABSTRACT
On its first appearance in 1781, the Critique of Pure Reason was met with considerable incomprehension, criticism and, Kant thought, misunderstanding. Six years later he published a second (“B”) edition with numerous additions and changes. In particular, he added a new preface, in which he attempted to explain his approach. In it is contained what at first seems to be an odd claim about the method of metaphysics.
