ABSTRACT

What is the relationship between psyche and imagination on the one hand and art on the other? The average person presupposes some sort of connection, she considers art as an expression of creativity, and creativity to be informed by the psyche and nourished by the imagination. For Jung also psyche, imagination and art are linked. In various articles published in The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature he discusses a range of those connections (Jung 2003). However, psyche and imagination play virtually no role in contemporary art criticism. Neither are they addressed in exhibition texts, catalogues, magazine articles, books on art criticism, or in art education at college.
