ABSTRACT

The emphasis upon rationalization in education promotes a poor thin language lacking in poetry. Against it, in this essay, language is considered to be a symbolic mediator – that means treating language as a process, not as a final product of grammatical structures. The poetic word I refer to is the ‘animic’ word, fruit of the image-dialogical process established in the classroom. I describe an experience with Brazilian students who wanted to read texts in English. The experience is an attempt to create together an ‘Education of Sensibility’, a pedagogical expression that re-unites the person with the nature of their surroundings – towards our individuation process.
