ABSTRACT

Children themselves demonstrate an innate capacity for story, as if some inborn instinct does indeed tell them that story is a way of making meaning, of understanding. In each, the Bible story is placed in the right context, as being at the heart of the act of worship. Thus the story is special because it is linked to special events and celebrations, and the events and celebrations themselves are special because of the story. Though receiving and responding to story is a vital part of the use of story in religious education, it is not the whole. Pupils need the chance to make, tell and write their own stories. Nursery and infant teachers who have always read and shared stories with their pupils should capitalize on the knowledge that story telling is important and ensure that both time and opportunity are given for individual children to tell their own stories.
