ABSTRACT

We would like to start this chapter by considering the range of students that we currently teach. In order to do this, let us picture one of our teaching sessions and consider the diversity within our student cohort. (If you have not had much experience of teaching to date then reflect on some of your own experiences as a student and remember one of your student classes.) Try to split the student group on the basis of identities – such as gender, age, ethnicity,1 disability – and calculate the proportion of these identities. What is the range of diversity that you are aware of in the group?
