ABSTRACT

Our discussions at this conference have made it clear that trade is controversial in the Asia-Pacific region, and this is also the case in the United States. Our system in the US requires close partnership with Congress, which delegates key aspects of trade negotiating authority to the President. We also work closely with business and other interest groups. Even in the highly politicized environment that typically surrounds trade efforts, we have accomplished a great deal, and it is worth reviewing some of the results.
