ABSTRACT

For the past 30 years, my work has involved managing the impact of globalization, particularly in Thailand, but sometimes also in other ASEAN countries. People in those nations tend to react negatively to the idea of globalization. I have come to appreciate that they think of it as a loss of status for their nation-state and for local control. To understand how these concerns arose, we need to study past experience. To understand why these concerns are important now, we need to examine why globalization might involve even more loss of control in the future.
