ABSTRACT

Gene therapy, better described as gene transfer, is the insertion of genes into an individual’s cells and tissues to treat diseases to replace a defective mutant allele with a functional gene. In Chapter 11, Dr Friedmann has given us an excellent overview of the future of gene doping in the world of sports; he has been the leader in this field of gene therapy since the beginning, an important member of the 2002 Symposium on the prospect of gene doping organized by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and chair of the WADA Gene Doping Panel. He has also been a leader in the oversight of the US trials.1
