ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the issues involved in establishing an advice centre for parents of children with special educational needs in one inner London borough, Tower Hamlets. It looks at the developments, both nationally and locally, which have supported this venture, but it also tries to identify the inherent tensions and sometimes conflicting philosophies which underpin the rather nebulous concept of partnership with parents in the educational arena post ERA (Education Reform Act, 1988). Finally, there is a review of what has been achieved in the first year of the centre’s existence and an attempt to chart the likely future course of the project.
