ABSTRACT

One way to explore the implications of these theories is to define and to quantify the nature of social capital. In this chapter, categories of social capital are defined, criteria for selecting indicators of social capital at national and community level and in research are discussed, and limitations and critiques of such indicators are identified. The potential of quantitative indicators of social capital for national policy evaluation, and for policy implementation are assessed. The complexities of measurement are illustrated in the context of education.
