ABSTRACT

Introduction The introduction to the book outlined our principal aim which is to examine the links between people management and performance drawing on relevant theory and empirical data. As we explained there are four sections to the book (previous research and model building, model exposition, model application and implications and conclusions). This chapter examines the previous research and puts forward the model which will form the backbone to the book. It has four specific aims:

1 to provide an overview of the previous research; 2 to identify particular problems which need to be addressed; 3 discuss the concept of Human Resource Advantage; 4 to put forward the HR causal chain model which we will use throughout the

book (see Figure 1.1).
