ABSTRACT

Though our research interests intersect and we are all in a faculty of education, we have different personal biographies and roles in the university. Allison, a PhD student, identifies most as a student. She did a master’s in genetics before entering the PhD. And her research interest emerges from this – the gendered, raced, classed experience of enculturation into a disciplinary culture. Marian, a PhD candidate, in part identifies as an academic since, while still a student, she has done considerable teaching and academic development. She is interested in how academic identity is shaped during the journey from beginning doctoral student through to new academic. Lynn, a professor, identifies as an academic, academic developer, and to some extent administrator (always within an academic role). Her work is directed at understanding and supporting the learning of both individual lecturers and disciplinary units.
